ABA Therapy & Speech Therapy Services

Sense Bloom Therapy

ABA Therapy in Scarborough

Scarborough is Toronto’s east — one of the most culturally rich and geographically expansive parts of the city. Families from Tamil Nadu, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Somalia, Jamaica, and dozens of other backgrounds have made their home here across communities as different as Birchcliff’s lakeside bungalows and Malvern’s apartment towers.

What these families share, when a child receives an autism diagnosis, is the same challenge: specialized support has historically not followed them to Scarborough the way it has concentrated in Toronto’s west and centre.

SenseBloom Therapy changes that. We provide evidence-based autism therapy for children in Scarborough — across all neighbourhoods, delivered by clinicians who come to your family. Our programs are supervised by Registered Behaviour Analysts registered with the CPBAO and accepted by the Ontario Autism Program.

Why Access Has Been a Problem Here

Most specialized behavioural therapy providers in the GTA are concentrated in Toronto’s west end and downtown core. Scarborough families who wanted quality autism support have historically faced a choice: travel long distances for clinic-based services, or settle for what is available locally.

That pattern produces a predictable result. Families who cannot sustain the commute delay starting therapy. Children pass through the early intervention window while their parents navigate logistics instead of supporting development.

SenseBloom’s approach is to bring clinical expertise to Scarborough rather than asking families to come to it. Our therapists serve communities across the full Scarborough geography — Agincourt to Highland Creek, Birchcliff to Malvern — without requiring families to absorb travel as a condition of access.

The Evidence Behind What We Do

Applied Behaviour Analysis is not a philosophy or a brand. It is a science — the systematic application of learning principles to build skills and understand behaviour. The Canadian Psychological Association identifies ABA as having the strongest evidence base of any intervention for autism spectrum disorder. Ontario’s government autism program is structured around it.

What ‘evidence-based’ means in practice: assessment tools with established reliability, strategies drawn from peer-reviewed research, data collected at every session and reviewed against measurable benchmarks, and programming that changes when the evidence shows it should. Not six months later.

Not every provider advertising autism therapy in Scarborough meets this standard. SenseBloom programs are held to it at every stage.

What Your Child's Program Could Address

Every SenseBloom program is individually designed — but the following areas are among the most commonly targeted for Scarborough children and families.

  • Functional communication — requesting, labelling, commenting, social communication
  • Reduction of challenging behaviours — identifying what drives them and teaching effective alternatives
  • Daily living skills — dressing, mealtimes, toileting, household routines
  • Social and play skills — engaging with peers, joining groups, cooperative play
  • Emotional regulation — recognizing and managing frustration, anxiety, and transitions
  • Academic preparation — attention, task initiation, following multi-step instructions

Two Examples of What a Program Might Look Like

A Four-Year-Old With Limited Communication

Assessment reveals a child who communicates primarily through pulling and leading, becomes dysregulated when activities end, and has not yet developed consistent pointing or eye contact for communication. The program targets functional requesting, joint attention, and imitation — the building blocks of communication — at high intensity using naturalistic teaching embedded in preferred play. Caregiver coaching ensures parents can use the same strategies at breakfast, in the car, and at bedtime. Within the first three months, parents typically report noticing new communicative attempts they had not seen before.

A Seven-Year-Old With Behaviour Challenges at School

A Functional Behaviour Assessment reveals that the child’s aggression during group tasks is escape-motivated — they avoid activities that exceed their current processing speed. The school-home program targets task tolerance, requesting breaks appropriately, and building the underlying academic skills. School collaboration ensures EA staff use consistent strategies. Families in this situation often see meaningful reductions in incident frequency within 8 to 12 weeks of consistent implementation.

Accessing OAP Support From Scarborough

Scarborough families with a child diagnosed with ASD should register with AccessOAP immediately. Your registration date determines when core funding becomes available — so delaying registration, even by months, delays funding proportionally.

After registration, Foundational Family Services are available at no cost. These sessions provide evidence-based parent coaching and resource navigation while you wait for core clinical services. They are not a substitute for direct therapy, but they are meaningful and available now.

SenseBloom is OAP recognized and accepts Core Clinical Funding for Scarborough families. Our intake team can walk you through the service agreement process and help you direct your funding toward our programs efficiently.

Your First Conversation With Us

Most families contact SenseBloom while still in the middle of the diagnostic process, or right after receiving a diagnosis and feeling unsure of what to do next. Both are exactly the right time.

Our intake team is not a sales department. We will spend genuine time with you, explain what the assessment process looks like, answer your questions about the OAP, and tell you honestly whether our services are the right fit for your child and family. There is no obligation beyond that first conversation.

If we are not the right fit, we will say so — and help you understand what to look for in a provider who is.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following answers are for informational purposes only. They do not constitute clinical or medical advice. Please consult a registered health professional for guidance specific to your child.

1.  What is the difference between a Behaviour Therapist and a Registered Behaviour Analyst?

A Behaviour Therapist (BT) delivers the direct therapy sessions with your child. A Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA Ont.) is the senior clinician who designs the program, reviews session data, supervises the BT, and makes all clinical decisions. In Ontario, RBAs must be registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO). At SenseBloom, every program has a dedicated RBA who is actively involved throughout — not someone who signs off paperwork once a month.

2.  My child does not have a formal diagnosis yet. Can we still reach out?

Yes. You do not need a diagnosis to contact SenseBloom or to receive a consultation. A formal ASD diagnosis is required to access OAP funding, but our team can begin a conversation about your child’s development, explain what to expect from the diagnostic process, and in some cases, start supportive programming while assessment is ongoing. If you are seeing signs of developmental delay or autism-related behaviours, earlier contact is better than waiting.

3.  How does SenseBloom work with Scarborough’s diverse family backgrounds?

Scarborough is one of Canada’s most multicultural communities, and our team reflects that. We have therapists who speak Tamil, Bengali, Tagalog, Mandarin, Cantonese, Urdu, Hindi, and other languages common across Scarborough. Parent coaching is adapted to your household’s communication style, cultural values, and family structure. We do not apply a one-size-fits-all approach to families any more than we do to children.

4.  What is a Functional Behaviour Assessment and when does my child need one?

A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) identifies the underlying reason a challenging behaviour occurs — not just what the behaviour looks like, but what need it is serving for the child. It is recommended when a child displays frequent or intense behaviours such as aggression, self-injury, or severe tantrums. At SenseBloom, FBAs are conducted by Registered Behaviour Analysts as part of the comprehensive assessment when clinically indicated.

5.  Can both ABA therapy and speech therapy be coordinated for my child?

Yes. For children with communication delays alongside behavioural challenges, combining behavioural therapy with speech-language support produces stronger outcomes than either approach alone. SenseBloom’s ABA and speech therapy teams share documentation, coordinate on communication goals, and plan together — so the two services reinforce each other rather than running in parallel without connection. You can learn more on our Speech Therapy page.

6.  How long before we see meaningful progress?

It varies significantly by child, age, program intensity, and the specific goals being targeted. Many families notice changes in engagement, cooperation with daily routines, and communication attempts within the first 6 to 10 weeks of an intensive program. More complex skills — spontaneous language, independent social play, academic task completion — typically emerge over months of consistent programming. At SenseBloom, progress is tracked through session data, so you always have an objective measure rather than clinical impressions.

7.  Does SenseBloom work with both TDSB and TCDSB schools in Scarborough?

Yes. With your consent, our clinicians collaborate with both Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board teams in Scarborough. We attend IEP meetings, provide written clinical recommendations, and train EA staff in strategies consistent with your child’s therapy program. Both boards’ documentation standards are familiar to our team.

8.  What if our family situation changes significantly during the program?

Life happens, and SenseBloom programs are not rigid contracts. Session schedules can be reduced, paused, or adjusted when significant life events make the current intensity unworkable. We ask for reasonable notice and will discuss clinical implications of any changes transparently. Our priority is keeping your child moving forward in whatever way your family can realistically sustain.
