ABA Therapy & Speech Therapy Services

Sense Bloom Therapy

ABA Therapy in Markham

Markham is where analytical families land. The tech-sector professionals who build their lives in Cornell, Unionville, Wismer, and Berczy are the same parents who arrive at an autism consultation having read the clinical literature, evaluated provider credentials, and prepared a list of questions.

That is exactly the kind of family SenseBloom was built for.

We provide evidence-based behavioural therapy for children with autism throughout Markham, supervised by Registered Behaviour Analysts registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Our programs are recognized by the Ontario Autism Program and designed to meet the expectations of families who understand the science — and the families who are encountering it for the first time.

The Questions Parents Ask First

Markham families tend to arrive with sharper clinical questions than most. Here are the ones we hear most often.

Is ABA really the right approach for my child?

ABA has the largest and most rigorous evidence base of any autism intervention in the scientific literature. Multiple randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses published in peer-reviewed journals support its effectiveness. That said, ABA is not the only support your child may need — speech therapy, occupational therapy, and school-based services often complement it. SenseBloom’s assessment identifies where ABA can help most and where other supports should be involved.

How do I verify provider credentials in Ontario?

Any clinician supervising ABA programs in Ontario must be a Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA Ont.) with an active registration on the CPBAO public registry at cpbao.ca. This is verifiable in under two minutes. At SenseBloom, our supervising clinicians are all CPBAO-registered, and we are transparent about credentials before any commitment is made.

What does the research say about where therapy should happen?

Studies consistently show that children generalize skills more effectively when therapy occurs in the environments where those skills actually need to function — the home, the community, the school. Skills learned at a kitchen table transfer to kitchen-table situations. Skills learned in a clinical office require additional ‘generalization training’ to appear anywhere else. For practical, everyday goals, a home-based delivery model produces superior outcomes for most children.

Program Types Available in Markham

Early Intensive Intervention (Ages 18 months to 5 years)

The most impactful intervention window. Programs at this stage target foundational skills — joint attention, imitation, play, and early communication — at 15 to 30 hours per week. Every month of intensive early intervention during this period produces compounding returns in development.

School-Age Skill Building (Ages 6 to 12)

YRDSB primary and junior grades place increasing social and academic demands on children. Programs for this age group target what determines real classroom success: sustained attention, task completion, peer interaction, and emotional regulation. With consent, we coordinate with your child’s school team throughout.

Adolescent Programming (Ages 13 to 17)

Older children in Markham benefit from programs targeting independence, self-advocacy, community participation, and preparation for secondary school completion and post-secondary pathways. Goals at this stage are driven increasingly by the young person’s own priorities — not just parent and clinician decisions.

Focused Behaviour Support

For families with a specific, bounded challenge — elopement, mealtime refusal, sleep disruption, school refusal — focused programs deliver targeted intervention without committing to a full comprehensive program. These are appropriate when one or two areas are significantly impacting daily life.

Collaboration With YRDSB and the Markham School Community

Markham’s York Region District School Board schools range from established community schools in Unionville and Markham Village to newer facilities serving Box Grove and Seaton. SenseBloom clinicians are experienced with the YRDSB special education system.

With your consent, we attend IEP meetings, provide written clinical input on goals and accommodations, and train EA staff in specific strategies from your child’s program. The goal is one coherent plan across home and school — not two parallel systems that do not communicate.

Families comparing coverage across York Region may also want to review our pages on ABA Therapy North York and ABA Therapy Pickering, which serve communities on either side of Markham.

A Transparent Statement About Our Clinical Values

ABA therapy has a complicated history. Early approaches were coercive, focused on compliance rather than wellbeing, and have since been criticized by autistic advocates and revised by professional standards.

SenseBloom practices contemporary, naturalistic, assent-based ABA. That means: we stop when a child is distressed rather than pushing through. We use the child’s genuine interests as a resource, not a reward to be earned. We set goals that reflect the family’s values and the child’s dignity — not external standards of what an autistic child ‘should’ look like.

If you have concerns about ABA’s history, we welcome that conversation. Our clinical team will be honest about what we do, what we will not do, and why the distinction matters.

OAP Funding in York Region and Markham

Markham families register with the Ontario Autism Program through AccessOAP. York Region core funding wait times are currently estimated at two to three years from registration — somewhat shorter than central Toronto, but still significant when your child is two or three years old.

Foundational Family Services are available immediately after registration at no cost — including parent coaching workshops and resource navigation. These do not replace direct therapy, but they provide practical strategies families can use while waiting.

SenseBloom accepts OAP Core Clinical Funding for Markham families and assists with all service agreement documentation. Our intake team is familiar with the York Region funding pathway and can help you understand your current position in the system.

Getting Started

The first step is a conversation. Contact SenseBloom and our intake team will schedule a free consultation — typically 30 to 45 minutes — to understand your child’s current profile, answer your clinical questions, and explain exactly what our programs look like in practice.

There is no sales pressure and no commitment required. If SenseBloom is not the right fit for your family, we will say so and help you understand what to look for elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following answers are for informational purposes only. They do not constitute clinical or medical advice. Please consult a registered health professional for guidance specific to your child.

1.  Does SenseBloom collaborate with York Region District School Board schools?

Yes. With parent consent, SenseBloom clinicians work directly with YRDSB schools throughout Markham. This includes attending IEP meetings, providing written clinical summaries, and coaching Educational Assistants on specific strategies from your child’s program. Aligning school and home approaches is one of the most reliable ways to accelerate skill generalization.

2.  My child was diagnosed through a private assessment. Does that affect OAP eligibility?

No. The Ontario Autism Program accepts diagnoses from qualified professionals regardless of whether assessment was publicly or privately funded. Private assessments in Ontario typically cost $2,500 to $5,000 and often have much shorter wait times than the OHIP-covered hospital route. For OAP registration, the diagnosis report must include the child’s name, date of birth, assessment date, diagnostic statement, and the clinician’s credentials.

3.  Can grandparents or other caregivers participate in the program?

Yes, and we actively encourage it. In many Markham families, grandparents serve as primary daytime caregivers. SenseBloom parent coaching is extended to any consistent caregiver in your child’s life — in whichever language works best for them. Consistent strategy use across all caregivers is one of the strongest predictors of program success.

4.  What does an RBA actually do day-to-day in my child’s program?

Your Registered Behaviour Analyst designs the entire program, writes the treatment goals, supervises the Behaviour Therapist who delivers sessions, reviews session data regularly, and makes all clinical decisions about when and how to adjust programming. Your RBA is also your primary point of contact for clinical questions. At SenseBloom, RBA involvement is active and ongoing — not limited to initial paperwork.

5.  Is there an age limit for beginning a program with SenseBloom?

SenseBloom serves children from 18 months through 17 years. Goal areas and teaching approaches differ significantly by age — early childhood programs focus on foundational communication and play, while adolescent programs emphasize independence, self-advocacy, and community participation. There is no age that is too young or too late to benefit from well-designed behavioural support.

6.  What if we are unhappy with our assigned therapist?

Therapeutic relationship quality matters clinically — not just personally. If a family is not comfortable with their assigned Behaviour Therapist for any reason, we work promptly to find a better match. Your supervising RBA remains constant through any staffing change, so your child’s program continues without interruption.

7.  Does private insurance cover behavioural therapy in Markham?

Many employer benefit plans — especially in Markham’s technology and professional services sectors — include coverage for ABA therapy under psychology or allied health categories. Annual coverage typically ranges from $1,500 to over $10,000 depending on the plan. SenseBloom provides itemized invoices and clinical reports in formats accepted by major Canadian insurers. Confirm your specific coverage with your HR or benefits provider before starting therapy.

8.  How transparent is SenseBloom about what ABA therapy cannot do?

Completely. ABA therapy builds skills and reduces barriers to participation. It does not change who your child is, eliminate autism, or guarantee specific outcomes. Progress depends on intensity, consistency, family involvement, and individual child factors that vary significantly. We set realistic expectations at intake, track progress rigorously, and tell you honestly when programming needs to change — or when a different approach might serve your child better.
